Is this course right for you?

The RYA Coastal Skipper course is designed for sailors who already have a foundation knowledge of navigation, tides, and basic seamanship skills gained with the completion of the RYA Day Skipper course.

Duration & Assessment

The course is approximately 50-60 hours of study, followed by an assessment consisting of three parts: IRPCS (1.5 hours), Chartwork (2 hours), and Passage Making (3.5 hours). You have the flexibility to take the assessment in one sitting, or as three separate papers.

Upon successful completion, this course awards the RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased theory certificate.

Course Extension - 6 months

There is an initial 6 months time limit to complete the course with a further 6 month extension available at a cost of an additional € 45,- fee.

  • Collision Regulations, lights, shapes, sound signals

  • Position fixing, estimated position, dead reackoning
  • Course to steer, plotting and calculations
  • Electronic aids to navigation, use of GPS, AIS etc.
  • Passage Planning, planning routes, watch schemes
  • Buoyage, lights, leading lines, sector lights
  • Essential safety practices and equipment onboard
  • Handling life rafts, life jackets, and flares
  • Mayday calls and communication in emergency
  • Meteorology and forecasting, weather patterns
