This course teaches you skippering skills. Learn to make decisions and be responsible for the safety of the yacht and crew.
It is a practical course that focuses on weather, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection, passage planning, navigation and pilotage. There is special emphasis on boat handling and you will practice mooring under various conditions. A night sail of at least 4 hours is also part of the program.

Students who successfully complete the Day Skipper syllabus are awarded the RYA Day Skipper certificate. The map indicates our sailing area, we will sail on the Waddensea close to "home".

Previous experience required

5 days aboard, 100 miles logged and 4 night hours. Basic sailing ability and theoretical knowledge to the level of the RYA Day Skipper Theory.

Preparation

We strongly advise to have basic sailing knowledge of navigation to the level of the RYA Day Skipper Theory. The Day Skipper practical course focusses on practical skills, there is no time to fill big theory gaps.

Course contents

Step on board and develop a great fundamental skillset as a Day Skipper.

The course consists of practical navigation and pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and basic skippering techniques enabling you to skipper a boat in local waters in daylight.

These courses combine well with the RYA Competent Crew. Everyone will focus on their own syllabus.

What's next?

At the end of the RYA Day Skipper course you will be confident to skipper a cruising yacht on short passages by day. Students who successfully complete the Day Skipper course are awarded the RYA Day Skipper practical course completion certificate and can charter anywhere around the world!

 

You now need to consolidate your training and gain experience. Develop routine and build miles in different areas to become a better skipper. We offer several milesbuilder & training trips that prepare you for the next step, the RYA Coastal Skipper Course. You can always call our office for advise!

After booking

On booking you receive a confirmation by mail. When you log in on the website more information on the trip is provided:

- Use the forum for getting in touch with the other crew
- When the skipper is assigned, you can contact him/her too.
- A couple of days or longer befor the trip starts you will receive some last info.

Price includes

Instruction, staying and sleeping on board, use of gas and diesel, insurances and Dutch VAT.

Price excludes

Transport to and from harbours of departure and destination. Vervoer van en naar de op- afstapplaats. Common board cash for food and drinks on board and harbour fees. The skipper does not participate in the costs.

Start of the course

Please do not arrive earlier than the given start time as we have a tight turn around of courses. The instructor will send you the exact location.
For Harlingen, the adress is Zuiderhaven 75 (in front of the church).

Save time for groceries at the point of departure.

Parking

Harlingen is easily accessible by public transport. Carpooling is also possible, after you log in you see the other participants and their hometowns. You can send them a message via the forum.

You can park for a fee at various locations.
Parking longer than a day is cheapest at:

End of the course

In general the course ends on the announced time, after cleaning the boat and disembarking.
